TWELVE GREAT FEASTS
The Byzantine liturgical year starts on 1 September and ends with Easter, the feast of feasts. About the resurrection of Christ, the Orthodox Church weaves a crown of twelve great feasts, each emphasizes some element, which is integrating the believer's faith.
Four are the feasts of the Mother of God and six recall moments of salvation in the life of Christ. In addition, Pentecost and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Icon by Giovanni Mezzalira
The icon shows the twelve apostles gathered in a semicircle. Are preceded by the Mother of Jesus. For Christ is not seen, their presence is only indicated by the light and fire. <
At the bottom, a black bow, comes a king who holds in his hands a canvas with twelve reels that symbolize the preaching of the Apostles. The captive king means the cosmos and holds out her hands toward the light and salvation to announce the disciples of Jesus.
